Homewood has the best lake views and is a good small mountain. There are a few very small non-resort ski areas around Tahoe that would be great for beginners. Change the oil and don't drive it too hard and it'll run forever. I am surprised that they cost that much. You should be able to get one for $4,000-5,000 easily.
