I put in a 400 sb that was vortec headed with a performer intake and a 454 TBI unit, with a comp cams XE268 cam. Yes, it was the stock computer-all I did was get the chip burned for my engine combo (plus no EGR or speed limiter).

In the carb conversion part you have to install a plane old style hei distributor and the proper intake that is meant for vortec heads as they have taller intake runners compared to other older style cylinder heads.
Vortec manifolds are actually wider than a standard SB Chevy by almost a quarter of an inch. Because the angle on the heads is the same, the manifold will fit between the heads but because of a .228" difference in width, it sits much higher leaving a larger than normal gap on the end rails.
