No, there is no rule - you can go as short as like. My advice would be to simply try out different lengths by gathering your current hammock at different lengths. Some people are not as sensitive towards discomfort, so you might be fine with a ~8' / 245cm hammock. For me it wouldn't be worth it.

Dirt and water got all up in the hem fold. I might try using a piece of aluminum foil as a melt barrier if I try this method.
The tablecloth comes with a perfect hem all the way around it. I just use this hem as the channel for my shock cord. I use a small nail, but you could use just about anything that would make a hole about the size you need. I put one hole about 18" from the end of the hammock and another hole about 3' from that.I'd say you made a good choice based on most of us use the same stuff (zing-it/lash-it, only difference is the color). Personally, I use Lash-it for the ridgeline and I like a reflective line for the guy outs (Lawson's Glowire). Have fun and don't fret over what's "Best". 03-17-2016, 10:40 #4.
Since the majority of hammock forum members are interested in camping and backpacking the traditional naval hammock is to heavy, doesn't pack well, and can come apart to easily. Pick any small cord that is listed by the cottage shops as a guy line, or suspension cord. Lash-it, Zing-it, Dynaglide, so on and so on are good options for either type of ridge line. Mason line is no good for a hammock ridgeline. The thing with the wise owl hammock is that it is a bit lighter material however, I seem to be pretty hard on my gear and it is handling my stupidity very well. I would say that it is worth the money spent, especially given the joy it has given me. I highly doubt I will go back to sleeping on the ground. Rather than having 1 hammock + a winter UQ + a 3 season UQ you could just have one 3 season hammock and 1 winter hammock.
