No, there is no rule - you can go as short as like. My advice would be to simply try out different lengths by gathering your current hammock at different lengths. Some people are not as sensitive towards discomfort, so you might be fine with a ~8' / 245cm hammock. For me it wouldn't be worth it.

The tablecloth comes with a perfect hem all the way around it. I just use this hem as the channel for my shock cord. I use a small nail, but you could use just about anything that would make a hole about the size you need. I put one hole about 18" from the end of the hammock and another hole about 3' from that.I'd say you made a good choice based on most of us use the same stuff (zing-it/lash-it, only difference is the color).
