Whether on the pro controller or on the joy cons the game will start out fine but over time as I play I will start getting a pull to the left. It got to the point in the last few seconds of play that I had to hold to the right to go straight. Press the X button (or where the X button would be on a single joy con) to check your rear view mirrors to see when the red shell is getting close, then release your item before it's too late. There is actually another way to do defend yourself though. You can use a stage hazard, dropped item, or even another player to block an incoming red shell.
