I got Home Sweet home, took an outpost, shot up Abernathy for supplies, defended it, and took 2 other settlements. I've set up the booze still and Pick-Me-Up in Murkwater Construction Site, Starlight Drive-in, and Sunshine Tidings Co-op, and supplied all 3 with food and water.
