Usually when this sensor fails the ignition system has no reference point to properly time spark (so it goes into limp mode, cutting revs at a specific point) but this is usually typical of high mileage cars. If just concerned, take it into the dealer and they will apply the mitigating patches for the car. And BTW, one of them made the transmission buttery smooth.
