I read all of Stephen King (Salem's Lot) and Dean Koontz (Phantoms) books. Peter Straub (Ghost), Dan Simmons (Summer of Night) they're okay but not some of my favorite. I decided to give other horror authors a chance and found a few I actually enjoyed. The Book of Ivy duology by Amy Engel. Technically not 1 favorite book but, they're so short compared to most books of their genre that they basically ARE one book. I have an endless list of favorites but in the end, I just went with the books I could read a thousand times over and I'd still love it as much as I did the first time I read it.

I discovered Joe Abercrombie last year, blitzed through the First Law trilogy, immediately read the first two books of the new trilogy then realised he wrote three books between them! My problem is it seems to be a genre that hit its peak in the late 60’s through 90s, and even modern iterations are few and far between and from what I’ve found always through a publisher.

For me, if I had to choose the first book that comes to mind is The Return of the Native by Thomas Hardy which is one of my all-time favorite books. I just found the story to be super fun and exciting, and I was entertained all the way through. Give me your best. East of Eden by John Steinbeck.

I have actually used a couple of case studies from the book for my essays and I’ve interviewed one of the doctors from it for my project, so it was definitely useful.
