You can use ppto on any shift you want as long as it has already been worked and is less than 7 days ago. You can put in 8 hours for that day if you want to. Basically, yes, you can do what you’re asking. Yes you can use PPTO to fucking leave early on an emergency, injury, or illness. I've done so before so I'm sure anyone else can. Also report whoever the fuck told you that to ethics or the useless open door. PPTO is a "fuck this" kind of paid time off. The company gives it to you so you might as well use it. Let your TL or coach know you are leaving early. Doesn't matter, you can apply it any time after your shift has started. I would do it after you clock out that way you know for sure how much time you need to apply. You don't need PPTO to call in, only if you don't want to be pointed. If you don't want to be pointed for calling in then you need to use enough PPTO to cover the full time you'll be missing. So if you're scheduled for 8 work hours then you'd need to use 8 hours of PPTO to not be pointed, or 4 hours to make it only half a point.
