I don't think there's necesarily a 'best' path, but here are my favorites: Hero - Greatswords / Luminary. I am a huge fan of the Unbridled Blade attack which has gotten me through a lot of boss battles. Erik - Knives. I find them thematically appealing since he is a thief / cutpurse and the attacks that he gets for them are very impressive. For the 3 mages, I really wanted to use the more melee oriented weapons with them, but seriously, it just felt like it gimped what they are great at, so I kept all 3 with their wand/heavy wand.
