It depends on the topic. IMO, writing the physical paragraph can easily be the the least time consuming part; often the thought behind the paragraph is what is time consuming. If it is something i think about often, I can write a page in less than an hour, of something I would consider quality.

However, a lower GPA won't necessarily sink one's chances of admission unless it's egregiously low.I've got my (expected) undergraduate education, all my research experience (I was in a lot of experimental fields before getting to philosophy, so no publications but plenty of research assistantship experience), teaching experience, languages, and... that's about it.
