Keep in mind the following: the older the Islay whisky, the more rounded it will become. The peat and smoke will meld more and more into the rest of the flavor profiles. You can say it becomes smoother, or creamier, or less spiky. Young Islays are feral beasts that will do nothing to hide the smoke and fire and earthiness.It looks like we got out of sync. Balvenie 12 is frequently available at Costco and it's a respectable gateway scotch. Laphroaig 10 is also frequently available at Costco but it is heavily peated and quite medicinal so, while quality whisky, it's not for everyone.
