The samba vw bug.
Rebuilding front beam on my 66. Removed the steering box and found it to be loaded with old moldy grease. I soaked for a week in cleaner and removed the grease and rust. I replaced both seals and threaded the cover and installed cap screws in lieu of plastic caps. I have read different articles that approach the lubrication of the steering boxes.

I removed them …Older boxes with the single metal threaded fill plug use oil. Later boxes with the two plastic plugs use grease. Yes, and the new TRW definately qualifies as the latter, it comes filled with that special "liquid grease" and plastic plugs on top. My son recently picked up a 1964 bug and we are servicing the brakes after noticing one of the brake cylinders was leaking. While we are at it we are replacing the bearings, races and seals. Both sides had different grease, one had a thicker red grease while the other side had a real thin runny type of black grease.
